Coastal Community Foundation is a public grantmaking foundation that connects passionate people to the charitable organizations and causes that are meaningful to them. Last year's increase in contributions shows the generosity that the Lowcountry inspires. Over 700 nonprofit organizations benefitted from hundreds of grant awards and in-depth technical assistance provided by Foundation Staff.

Addlestone Hebrew Academy

Addlestone Hebrew Academy is one of the oldest Jewish community day schools in the nation. Their early childhood programs aim to grow thinking, caring, and self-confident children. Their K-8 programs strive to teach students about the balance between their academic, social, emotional, and spiritual lives. The Academy doesn't simply teach students, it nurtures them as they grow into young adults.

  • Alliance for Full Acceptance

    The Alliance for Full Acceptance strives to achieve equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. There are over 1,600 donors/members and friends that help make this organization successful. The Alliance offers two main programs--a parenting group and ADORASO, an outreach program to the religious community--as well as many education opportunities to help spread the word of equality.

  • Roscoe Reading Program

    Teaching children to read can sometimes be difficult. But add dogs and prizes into the mix and it may just become fun. Roscoe Reading Program is an award-based Elementary School reading program. They bring Roscoe's four-legged friends to schools in the Southern Lowcountry and help get children enthusiastic about reading.

    The Georgetown County Library is an important part of the Georgetown community. The Library supports the process of reading and learning and believes that they open a world of imagination and creativity in everyone.     Teach My People is a faith-based organization that works to teach children in the Waccamaw school district how to work through academic, economic, social, emotional, and spiritual difficulties in their every day lives. The program also promotes spiritual, educational, and emotional growth through after-school and summer programs.

If a child spends more than one year in the foster care system, it is likely that they will enter at least four homes before finding their "forever" home or aging out of the system. Children Come First works to make changes in the foster care system and is a unified voice to advocate for the children in foster care.

  • Meals on Wheels Summerville

    Nutrition is important to living a healthy life, but for some people, it's difficult to get the nutritional meals they need. Meals on Wheels Summerville enlists volunteers to prep food, package it, and deliver it to elderly people unable to get out of their homes to grocery shop or unable to cook for themselves. MOW operates 7 days a week to ensure that everyone is able to get the nutrition they need every day.

  • Lowcountry Food Bank

    We hear about hunger issues in other parts of the world, but it's a lot closer to home, too. Lowcounty Food Bank works in different ways to alleviate hunger--the Food Bank distributes perishable and non-perishable food to organizations that serve the hungry in South Carolina's 10 coastal counties, and they also educate the public about domestic hunger and how to eliminate it.

  • Carolina Youth Development Center

    Charleston Orphan House was the first publically funded orphan house in the nation. From that came Carolina Youth Development Center where over 600 youth are given hope each year through programs that help them deal with any problems including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, or severe emotional disorders.

    Everyone deserves to feel safe and secure in and out of their homes. Hope Haven of the Lowcountry aims to provide assistance to children experiencing abuse as well as adults dealing with rape, sexual assault and incest. Hope Haven works with local hospitals to ensure professional care and local law enforcement to help victims' have their voices heard.

ACCESS Network

Founded in 1987, ACCESS Network, Inc. once only provided end-of-life services to HIV/AIDS patients. In the '90s, they revamped their services to include long-term medical care, supportive mental health and substance abuse services, housing stabilization and sustainability, and advocacy. They also offer HIV awareness education, confidential HIV testing and counseling, group and individual support, and prevention and nutrition programs.

  • Friends of Caroline Hospice

    Being around friends and family is important during the final days of life. Friends of Caroline Hospice has been making this possible for over 20 years. The first hospice in Beaufort County, Friends of Caroline Hospice does not accept money from patients' families, friends, or insurance companies. This organization aims to surround the terminally ill with friends and family to make their passing a journey, not a lonely experience.

  • Smith MedicalClinic

    Staying healthy is difficult during times of low wages and job and medical insurance loss. Smith Medical Clinic in Pawleys Island is a free clinic that offers medical care to indigent individuals and families that do not have health insurance. The Clinic helps over 6,000 people annually with anything from illnesses to routine medical check-ups, and it's always free of charge!

    Berkeley Citizens, Inc. gives assistance to developmentally disabled people--anyone dealing with mental retardation, autism, head injuries, spinal cord injuries and all of the conditions that accompany these disabilities. Berkeley Citizens strives to help these individuals and their families live productive, fulfilling lives by offering individually-designed support services as well as education and programs for the individuals and their families.

  • Volunteers in Medicine

    In 1993, a group of retired medical professionals had the desire to continue practicing medicine on a volunteer, part-time basis. They saw a rise in individuals living in coastal South Carolina without medical insurance and developed Volunteers in Medicine (VIM). VIM utilizes retired medical professionals and offers free medical care for individuals and families without medical insurance.

  • Rein and Shine Horses that Heal

    Alternative care can be extremely beneficial to children and adults with physical, emotional, social, or cognitive disabilities. Rein and Shine Horses that Heal is an equine therapy facility that offers therapeutic horseback riding to disabled individuals. Not only is this alternative care a way for these individuals to enhance their independence and self-esteem, it also improves balance, concentration, mobility, muscle tone, coordination, and posture.
