Fred Lincoln has been working for years in the Cainhoy area to reclaim and restore its African American heritage, starting with this one-room schoolhouse, which was his only hope for an education during the segregated fifties.
He couldn't save the school that meant so much to him, but he is doggedly working to save heirs' property from encroaching development. Ironically, the "undesirable, mosquito-ridden" marsh and waterfront property, that was given or sold to freed slaves after the Civil War, is now prime real estate. The Center for Heir's Property Preservation is hard at work in the area, and the Wando Huger Community Fund at Coastal Community Foundation has helped area residents to assess needs and respond to them.
