The former Grand Strand Girls began as the McClellanville "Queen Bees", a league for girls ages 9 to 18 that author Ted Rosengarten started, from the help of a John D. and Catherine T. McArthur Foundation grant. The team competed on soccer fields located between Mount Pleasant and Myrtle Beach. Along the way, they learned life lessons that extended deep into their academic and social lives.

The girls had an exceptionally high graduation rate, and many went off to play competitive college soccer. By investing in this team, the league also made a long-lasting impact on the wealth of the community. Some funds which provided grants for these girls were the Ketner Fund and the Elizabeth C. Rivers Lewine Charitable Lead Trust.

Charleston Country organizations also supported by Coastal Community Foundation and its donors include Charleston Stage Company, Lowcountry Open Land Trust, Jewish Community Center, and Crisis Ministries.
