Scholarship FundsScholarship funds typically award grants for tuition, room & board to deserving students based on criteria defined by the establishing donor. Coastal Community Foundation staff assists donors in establishing criteria and managing the entire scholarship application and review process. In some cases, where a scholarship is designated for attendance at a specific school, the school determines the most qualified students to be awarded. Donors may name their scholarship fund or give anonymously. Each new gift added will receive the maximum tax benefit allowable. DONOR STORY: Rufus Barkley was a Renaissance man with interests that ranged from ballroom dancing and opera to football and bush-whacking on his Colleton County property. Rufus' diverse interests reflected his genuine personality and committed involvement in many aspects of his community. His son, Miles, reflected on his father's strong character, "If I can be just half the person he was, I'll be alright." Before Rufus passed away of Lou Gherig's disease in 2001, his family, friends and business colleagues at the family-run Cameron and Barkley Company created a scholarship fund in his honor. To date, The Rufus C. Barkley, Jr. Leadership Scholarship has provided eight talented students with a four-year award to attend college, currently at $10,000 per year, and has inspired them to emulate the integrity, compassion and vitality of the man it honors. |
