Request for Nominations for Coastal Community Foundation's
2010 Haven Award for Selfless Community Giving

Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina is accepting nominations for the 2010 Haven Award for Selfless Community Giving. Named for a founding member of the Community Foundation, Malcolm D. Haven, this prestigious award is given to an individual in recognition of “selfless community giving” in Berkeley, Charleston, or Dorchester Counties.

In 1983, when Mal Haven received the inaugural award, he spoke of the “Movers and Doers” of the community as the M.A.D. group. “Life is exciting as you witness situations evolve for the better due to your participation,” he said.

Take this opportunity to acknowledge someone you feel has given that extra measure of time, thought, work, resources and love to our community. Consider your nominee’s accomplishments, leadership and generosity of spirit – their “selfless community giving”. Community work may be part of the nominee’s job, or purely voluntary. What matters is the degree to which the individual goes beyond what is expected or asked. This may have been achieved through major accomplishments in one area of interest, or through a broad range of activities. And, most importantly, we wish to recognize an individual’s tireless and sustained commitment over the long-term. The Haven Award celebrates someone who has devoted years to making a lasting difference in our community.

The 2010 Haven Award will be announced and presented at Coastal Community Foundation’s Donor Celebration scheduled for May 8th, and the recipient will be invited to designate a local non-profit agency to receive a grant of $1,000.

Help us continue celebrating the human spirit that uplifts us all! Individuals or groups may make nominations until the deadline, Friday, March 5th. All nominations must be mailed with a postmark no later than Thursday, March 4, 2010 or hand-delivered by Friday, March 5, 2010 to 90 Mary Street, Charleston, S.C. 29403. Nomination forms may be obtained by contacting Christine Beddia at 723-3635 or Christine@CoastalCommunityFoundation.org.

Your submission is the single most important document that the committee will use to determine the recipient of this award. Please present your candidate’s accomplishments, affiliations, and honors in a legible and thorough manner. Do not assume that the committee will know your candidate, nor should you rely on name recognition or notoriety to convey his or her work. Use no more than two typed pages. Be concise and specific. A résumé is helpful but not required.

Please also submit no more than four letters of support (1 – 2 pages each) from others in the community. The substance of these letters is an important part of the application, but only four will be considered. Please consider that while each letter of support may contain some similar information, it is beneficial if a range of constituents are asked to write letters so a broad picture is presented of the candidate. As nominator, you are the sole contact for this application; we will notify only you once the decision is made, and we ask that you relay the information to whoever sent a letter of support.
