Recent NewsHampton/Allendale Grants Made
03/22/2010The following Hampton and Allendale- based nonprofit organizations received grant awards from the Winthrop Family Allendale/Hampton Fund, F. James and Sheila Hodges Fund, and an additional gift from a Winthrop family member. They are listed by category and a brief description of the funding request is included. Program budgets listed refer to the total budget requested to run the program or support the requested. All organizations have been vetted by a volunteer-committee and for most partial funding has been awarded by the aforementioned Foundation funds. ARTS Hampton County Friends of the Arts- Encourages and assists artistic and creative endeavors in Hampton County through cooperative efforts with organizations having similar aims. First Saturday Initiative- Program budget $18,283 Beginning in January 2010, the First Saturday Initiatives seeks to offer a variety of programming to youth ages- 6-18 in a time frame that suits the schedule of families who must travel outside of the county for employment. Currently, programming is only available on Mon. - Fri. Through a participation study in partnership with the South Carolina Arts Commission, the Hampton Friends for the Arts learned that there are a number of participants not being reached and aims for the First Saturday Initiative to encourage broader engagement in the arts. EDUCATION Alexander Community Development Corporation- Provides well-developed programs that meet the needs of the youth and member of the community Repair of Donated Classroom Trailer- Program budget $4700 To repair a portable classroom that was donated by the Beaufort County School District to the Alexander Community Development Corporation. This refurbished portable will allow for dividing the students into smaller groups and for converting an existing classroom into a computer lab. This will increase computer use during the after school, summer and mentoring programs. Allendale County First Steps Partnership- Ensures that children in Allendale County arrive at first grade healthy and ready to succeed Summer Home Visitation Program- Program budget $6140 To continue to provide a six week home visitation program to 20 identified at-risk rising Kindergarteners during the summer. The program, Countdown to Kindergarten, focuses on improving readiness for 1st grade through involving parents, teaching parenting skills, increasing positive parent-child interactions and parent knowledge about developmental and age appropriate activities. Boys & Girls Club of Allendale County- Inspires and enables young people to realize their full potential Request for Operating Support- $73,000 General operating funds are needed to continue to serve 100 Allendale County youth after school and during the summer at the Boys and Girls Club. Affiliation with the Boys and Girls Club of America enables utilization of proven programming with a highly professional and accountable organizational structure. Hampton County Literacy Council- Provides a comprehensive and fully coordinated adult basic education system Additional Day for Estill Satellite Office- Program budget- $18,738 To add one Adult Education instructional day at a satellite site in Estill/Hampton County. This program provides the only day time classes in Hampton County and will collaborate with the Town of Estill, the Family Literacy program of Hampton County School District 2, and Workforce Investment to provide needed skills in basic reading, math and grammar to those without transportation to the main literacy site in Hampton. SC Governor's School for Science & Math Foundation- Supports the mission of the Governor's School, which is to develop the scientifically astute and ethically aware leaders needed for our state's expanding knowledge-based economy Summer Science Program- Program budget $12,000 The SSP provides hands-on experiences with science, math and technology for SC middle schoolers through a residential camp experience. Students choose courses that are interesting to them, which are highly specialized courses taught by distinguished SC college & university professors as well as by GSSM faculty. This request would provide financial aid to 2 students from Allendale and Hampton counties. The average cost of a week of camp is $600. Technical College of the Lowcountry Foundation- Raises funds to support and further the educational mission of TCL Mungin Center Student Lounge- Program budget $8,940 During the 2010 school year, over 100 students are enrolled on TCL's Mungin Center in Varnville. Requested funds, in addition to state and federal funds, would be utilized to renovate the Mungin Student Center, which was erected in the 1970s. In renovating the student lounge TCL aims to increase social interaction among students to affect their retention in a positive way. ENVIRONMENT Community Animal Shelter- Alleviates suffering endured by lost, abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats Kennel Expansion- Program budget $20,603 $17,603 has been raised and the Winthrop grant funds would provide the balance needed to complete the project. The expansion will increase the kennels from 12 to 24 and allow the shelter to take in and hold adoptable animals longer in anticipation of adoption. HEALTH Allendale County Hospital- Improves the health and well-being of the community by providing high quality health care services Diabetes Good Faith Fund- Program budget $99,999 To contribute to the successful reduction of diabetes and to the education of diabetics. The request is for a Good Faith Fund (GFF) for 20 uninsured diabetic patients who are unable to pay for medical services. Allendale County Schools- Ensures that every student has an opportunity to be successful Allendale Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy- Program budget of $10,690 The program will match 10 trained adult volunteers with ten 11th or 12th grade students. The volunteers will provide the students with experiences not typical for this student population in an effort to support and guide them toward smart decisions. Community of One- Addresses the growing hunger, malnutrition and obesity issues in Hampton County Nutrition Education- Program budget of $7,000 This project will offer nutrition education and healthy food preparation classes to families in need in Hampton County. Community of One was granted use of 20 acres of land to be used as a community garden and the effort is in partnership with several other organizations. Hampton Regional Medical Center- Compassion, Commitment, Excellence, Every Person, Every Time Hampton County Health Fair- Program budget $17,660 This health fair will be the first one organized in Hampton County. Free heath screenings as well as educational sessions will be provided for participants, in coordination with vendors providing materials on topics such as health insurance, nutrition and fitness, and other health topics. Funding would support the operational costs of conducting the health fair such as facility fees, rentals, supplies, advertising and lab fees associated with screening cots. Healthy Learners Allendale County- Removes children' health barriers to learning with love and compassion Healthy Learners Allendale- Program budget of $250,355 Healthy Learners Allendale provides access to basic health care services for uninsured and underinsured children in Allendale. In coordination with school nurses and health care providers, Healthy Learners provides the following services to their clients: Care Coordination, Counseling, Episodic Care, Vision and Hearing Care and Medications. Transportation is provided to make the services accessible. Little Red Dog Foundation- Creates mobility and independence for people with disabilities by providing AmTrykes AmTrykes (cycles for children with disabilities- Program budget of $3,500 Through an application process that includes an evaluation by a clinician the Little Red Dog Foundation has identified children, who would be helped by an AmTryke. Each AmTryke will be customized to the students needs, and follow-up meetings and appointments will be conducted to monitor the progress for each child. Welvista- Improves health and wellness for the uninsured Allendale Smiles- Program budget of $373,036 The Smiles program works to address the dental needs of indigent children in Allendale County by partnering with the Allendale School District to provide care on school ground. In addition to this component, Welvista also provides a mail-order prescription assistance program and educational program. In the 2008-2009 school year, the program served 924 students. HUMAN NEEDS Allendale County Rescue Squad- Provides prompt and reliable healthcare to the sick, injured and elderly) Monitor for State Required Capnometry/Capnography- Program budget of $20,490 South Carolina DHEC mandates all ALS ambulances have capnometry/capnography for monitoring intubated patients by the end of 2010. This grant will put into service 1 additional ambulance with the required equipment. American Red Cross, Carolina Lowcountry Chapter- Provides relief to victims of disasters and helps prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies Hampton County Residential Fire Victims- Program budget of $45,000 A Disaster Action Team responds to the scene of a house fire providing immediate assistance of food, clothing, temporary shelter and other disaster related services. Child Abuse Prevention Association- Works to build a community intolerant of child abuse and neglect Open Arms Shelter- Program budget of $584,602 In 2008, 12% of the shelter residents were from Hampton and Allendale due to lack of foster homes in those areas. Residents receive food, clothing, personal hygiene care, medical and dental referrals, recreational and educational support and supplies, and transportation to schools and all appointments. Hope Haven of the Lowcountry- Provides comprehensive services which promotes healing for child victims of abuse and adult victims of rape Counseling therapy services for abused children- Program budget of $51,708 Requested funds will prove therapy to child and adult victims of sexual assault on a weekly basis in Hampton and Allendale counties. Through treatment utilizing clinical measures, victims will obtain better coping skills and a decreased level of trauma. In 2008, Hope Haven provided services to 36 direct victims and 48 secondary victims in Hampton and Allendale counties. Lowcountry Food Bank- Feeds the poor and hungry of 10 coastal counties of SC by distributing and soliciting healthy food to nonprofit organizations Hunger Free Hampton County- Program budget of $91,273 The Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) is the only clearinghouse for high-quality, low-cost foods in Hampton County. Requested funds would be utilized to purchase food for distribution through LCFB's network of agencies (e.g. pantries, soup kitchens and shelters). LCFB has projected to recruit a minimum of 3 additional agencies for distribution sites. |
